ALEJANDRO MAZON
Alejandro Mazon was born in Havana, Cuba on May 25th 1962. With parents from Galicia and Santander, he was raised with a strong Spanish identity, and a passion for Cuban culture. In 1970 his family left Cuba and lived in Madrid until 1974, when they finally settled in the United States.
By his own account, Mazon was not a particularly good student, and his only interests were art, photography and literature. In 1980 after graduating from High School he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, with a scholarship based solely on his talent. His work caught the attention of Cuban master Juan Gonzalez (1942 – 1993). Gonzalez became his mentor, and began tutoring him both privately and at the School of Visual Arts where he was a teacher. For the next four years Juan Gonzalez became a strong philosophical influence in his approach to the creative process.
From 1984 to 1990 Mazon did not produce work, yet nurtured friendship s with painters, writers and performers in New York’s underground art scene. It was not until the summer of 1990 that Mazon began to paint once again, shortly after the news that his closest friend was diagnosed as HIV +.
By November 1991 Mazon had his first exhibition at one of Miami’s premier galleries, launching a career that has continued to the present day. He now paints out of his studio in Riverdale, and has recently established a second studio deep in the Catskills Mountains in upstate New York where he spends much of his time.
Alejandro Mazon exhibits his works constantly, and has become part of several museum and private collections throughout the United States, Latin America and Europe.
